Telegraph Cove

" One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn't as individuals. "

Jean Vanier

Telegraph Cove is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, just 26 kilometres southeast of Port McNeill. The area has been home to the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations for over 9,000 years. Telegraph Cove is home to 20 permanent residents year round. This number swells substantially during the summer months.

The quaint seaside village of Telegraph Cove was first settled in 1912. It was established as the northern terminus for the telegraph line from Campbell River. By the 1920’s there was a salmon saltery and a sawmill that provided lumber to the North Island. Telegraph Cove was used as a relay station during WWII. Up until the 1950’s, the only access to Telegraph Cove was by boat or plane. Under their own initiative, business owners pushed a road through to the highway. During the 1970’s tourism became the primary economic driver.

Telegraph Cove is one of the last remaining coastal boardwalk communites. There are boardwalks connecting all the wooden buildings built on pilings. The community has made a great effort to preserve many of the historic buildings. The first whale watching tour in British Columbia began in Telegraph Cove 30 years ago and still operates today. Telegraph Cove is home to The Whale Interpretive Centre. Nearby is the famous Robson Bight, an orca rubbing beach. Telegraph Cove is also the launching point for people wishing to access Broughton Archipelago Marine Park. The spectacular scenery and surprisingly calm waters make for some great fishing, diving, and kayaking opportunities.

Services in Telegraph Cove are extremely limited and are not available during the winter months. There is a marina, general store, liquor store, pub, restaurant, cafe, and several gift shops. All the services one would require are available in nearby Port McNeill.
