Shawnigan Lake is located on the shores of its namesake, 48 kilometres north of Victoria. Shawnigan Lake is home to 8,000 permanent residents. 

Shawnigan Lake was settled in the late 1800’s. The primary industry was logging. A sawmill operated on the shores of Shawnigan Lake until it burnt down for the third and final time in the mid 1900’s. The E & N Railway (Esquimalt & Nanaimo) was constructed in two parts and the last spike was driven at Shawnigan Lake in 1886. Memory Island is the only public island on Shawnigan Lake. It was established as a park to commemorate the lives lost during WWII. 

Shawnigan Lake has been a weekend getaway since it was first established. The 8 kilometre long lake is a popular recreation destination for all manner of water sports. Shawnigan Lake is part of the Trans Canada Trail system. The Kinsol Trestle was recently restored and reopened to the public. It is one of the world’s larges wooden railway trestles. There are also opportunities in and around Shawnigan Lake for hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing. 

Services in Shawnigan Lake are basic. There is an elementary school, several private schools, doctors, dentists, churches, grocery store, liquor store, general stores, clothing store, and a hair salon. There are also several restaurants, coffee shops, and pubs to choose from. Shawnigan Lake has a thriving arts community with many artists, musicians, writers, and actors.
