Quadra Island

" When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect. "

Aldo Leopold

Quadra Island is located off the east coast of Vancouver Island, just a 10 minute ferry ride from Campbell River. Quadra Island is home to the We Wai Kai First Nations and 2,700 permanent residents.

Quadra Island was first settled in the 1880’s. Primary industries were mining, logging, and fishing. A fish cannery operated on Quadra Island for almost 40 years in the early 1900’s. The first hotel on Quadra Island, built in 1890, is still operating. The Cape Mudge Lighthouse is located at the original First Nations village site. Petroglyphs can still be found on the rocks at low tide.

Quadra Island is the largest and most populated of the Discovery Island Group at 276 square kilometres. This vibrant, thriving community now focuses on the arts, culture, and tourism. There are five species of salmon in the local waters making Quadra Island a great fishing destination. There is also boating, kayaking, birding, wildlife viewing, diving, and whale watching. For the land lovers there are extensive well maintained trails throughout Quadra Island. Or bike around the Island and discover one of the many art studios and galleries.

Quadra Island has many services to offer including an elementary school, churches, grocery stores, doctors, dentist, pharmacy, credit union, building supply store, and a gas station. There is a community centre, a farmers market during the summer and fall months, a library, and the First Nations museum now has a carving and artist centre. The remaining services one would require can be accessed in nearby Campbell River.
