Port Hardy

" Community is a sign that love is possible in a materialistic world. "

Jean Vanier

Port Hardy is located on the very northern tip of Vancouver Island. The area has been home to the Kwakiutl First Nations for over 8,000 years. Port Hardy is the largest community on North Vancouver Island with over 5,000 permanent residents.

Port Hardy was originally a Hudson Bay Company trading post called Fort Rupert. The economy of Port Hardy has always been resource based – fishing, logging, and mining. The highway from Campbell River to Port Hardy was finally paved in 1979. The bustling deep water harbour of Port Hardy became the home of the BC Ferry terminal serving Prince Rupert and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Today, like many West Coast communities, Port Hardy’s primary resource and economic driver is tourism.

‘Where the road ends and the adventure begins’ aptly describes Port Hardy and all that it has to offer. There is fantastic fishing, kayaking, and diving, whale watching and wildlife viewing, as well as numerous hiking and biking trails. Stroll along the seawall, have a picnic at one of the many waterfront parks, stop by the Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre and Hatchery, enjoy a round of golf, take in a stock car race, or enjoy one of the recreational facilities including an arena and a swimming pool.

Port Hardy is a full service community rich in culture and history. There are many galleries and studios to explore. Port Hardy has its own hospital and an airport.
