" In every community there is work to be done . . . In every heart there is the power to do it. "

Nanaimo is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, 110 kilometres north of Victoria. Nanaimo is home to the Snuneymuxw First Nations and 84,000 permanent residents.

Nanaimo is known as the Harbour City or the Hub City. Nestled on the shores of Nanaimo Harbour, Nanaimo first began as a trading post in the 1840’s, making it the third oldest city in British Columbia. When coal was discovered, a fort quickly replaced the trading post in the 1850’s. By the 1880’s the railroad was passing through Nanaimo and the town really took off from there. At one time Nanaimo had the largest Chinatown in British Columbia. Logging replaced coal mining as the primary industry in the 1940’s. A large pulp and paper mill was constructed south of town in 1958 which is still operating today.

Nanaimo continues to be an industrious town. Government and tourism are the primary employers. There is a small commercial fishing fleet and aquaculture. The Port of Nanaimo is the largest port on Vancouver Island. Nanaimo is home to the Pacific Biological Station that conducts fisheries research, Nanaimo has water and land airports as well as three separate ferry terminals.
