" We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community. "

The area known as the Malahat is actually a stretch of highway 25 kilometres long that connects Greater Victoria to the Cowichan Valley. It has been home to the Malahat First Nations for thousands of years and is considered to be one of the most scenic roadways in Canada.

Farmers in the lush and productive Cowichan Valley had two difficult options for getting their product to Victoria. They could go by boat or they could endure a difficult 3 day inland trek over the mountains. Neither was satisfactory. As far back as 1874 efforts were made to find a shorter route. None were successful.

In 1903, Major MacFarlane, owner of a large farm in Cobble Hill, took matters into his own hands. Alone and armed with only a hand compass he successfully surveyed a route from Mill Bay to Goldstream. When the single lane gravel road was completed in 1911, Major MacFarlane was the first to drive over the road with his team of horses.

Activities, other than enjoying the spectacular view at the summit, are limited. There are several small lakes in the area for fishing. There are hiking trails in the several parks along the route including Goldstream Provincial Park and Spectacle Lake Provincial Park.

The area is not conducive to services as the highway climbs 356 metres in just a few short kilometres. There is a restaurant and a gas station. One must commute to either Duncan or Greater Victoria for all service requirements.
