" For a community to be whole and healthy, it must be based on people's love and concern for each other. "

Millard Fuller

Ladysmith straddles the 49th parallel on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Nestled on the hillside above Ladysmith Harbour, once known as Oyster Harbour, Ladysmith is only 20 minutes south of Nanaimo. Home to the Stz’uminus First Nations, Ladysmith is also home to 8,500 permanent residents.

Ladysmith was established in the 1890’s as a coal mining town. Demand for coal declined in the early 1920’s. It would be fifteen long years before logging began in the 1930’s and Ladysmith would become a thriving community once again. At one time there were several major logging operations in the Ladysmith area. Forestry is still a major industry in Ladysmith along with tourism and agriculture. Oyster farming is still alive and well.

Ladysmith is one of the fastest growing communities in British Columbia and yet it manages to skillfully retain its small town feel. You can shop in the vibrant heritage district and then catch a trolley bus down to the beach for a swim or to enjoy one of the many free concerts during the summer months. Take a heritage tour or a wine tour. There are many art galleries and private studios in Ladysmith. Studio tour brochures can be found at the local Chamber office. Other activities in Ladysmith include boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming, golfing, and hiking.

Ladysmith is a full service community with a variety of shops and services to meet all your needs. Nanaimo is a short drive north for those requiring serious retail therapy.
