Duncan

" A community needs a soul if it is to become a true home for human beings. "

Pope John Paul II

Duncan is located in the heart of the Cowichan Valley, 50 kilometres north of Victoria. Duncan was and still is home to the Cowichan First Nations. There are over 5,000 permanent residents in Duncan proper.

Duncan was originally settled in the 1870’s by William Duncan. When the railway came through in 1886, the town really began to flourish. The train station built in 1912 still exists today. The primary industries were logging, milling, mining, and farming. Duncan even had its own vibrant Chinatown in the early 1900’s but post war restrictions on immigration lead to its eventual disappearance.

Duncan touts itself as the City of Totems. Duncan is home to over 80 totem poles at present, including the world’s largest totem pole. Duncan has a strong First Nations community which one can experience at the Quw’utsun’ Cultural and Conference Centre. Another popular experience not to be missed is the BC Forestry Discovery Centre, a 100 acre living museum.

Duncan has a flourishing arts community which is evident when exploring the many galleries and boutique shops downtown. Downtown Duncan hosts the summer Saturday market, an eclectic mix of vendors including farmers, artisan, entertainers, and natural health practitioners. Duncan is a full service community serving the more than 80,000 residents in the Cowichan Valley.
