Chemainus

" There is more than a verbal tie between the words common, community, and communication. "

John Dewey

Chemainus is nestled on the shores of the deep water harbour, Chemainus Harbour, once named Horseshoe Bay Harbour which is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, one hour north of Victoria. Chemainus is home to the Chemainus First Nation and approximately 5,000 permanent residents.

Originally Chemainus was a small farming community. But, thanks in part to its deep water harbour, the community quickly grew into a bustling logging and mill town. The railroad also contributed to its growth. When the mill, once touted as the largest sawmill in the world, was rumoured to be closed, the business community joined together to create a new commerce for their town. Chemainus is now known as `The Little Town That Did`. Starting with just five murals, today Chemainus is world famous for its 40 plus murals throughout the community that draws thousands of visitors every year and that has spurred the growth of over 300 businesses.

All the delightful tourist attractions aside, there is so much to do in Chemainus including biking, hiking, and even hang gliding. Go swimming at Fuller Lake or scuba diving at the artificial reef created from a sunken 747. Enjoy the neighbourhood parks and beaches or take the ferry to Thetis Island for a day of exploration. There is a great 18 hole golf course and even an ice arena for some indoor winter recreation. The marina in the harbour is a launching point for boaters, kayakers, and sailers alike.

Chemainus is a full service community with elementary and high schools, several denominations of churches, full health care including a small hospital, several financial institutions, grocery store, liquor store, and gas stations. Chemainus has a wonderful theatre, much loved up and down Vancouver Island. While the majority of businesses are tourist driven, a short drive to either Duncan or Nanaimo will provide you with all the services you might require.
