" We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community. "

Located on the south shore of Barkley Sound, is nestled the small quintessential West Coast village of Bamfield, home to some 450 year round residents, including the Nuu-Chah-Nulth First Nations. Surrounded by crown land, Barkley Sound, and considered the heart of the Pacific Rim National Park rain forest, Bamfield can be accessed by gravel road, seaplane, or boat. The 100 passenger Lady Rose and the 200 passenger Francis Barkley cargo ships service the Barkley Sound area which includes stops in Bamfield.

At one time, Bamfield was the most easterly point of the underwater cable connecting Canada to Australia. Now the cable station is home to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre which is jointly run by five western Canadian universities, including the University of Victoria. With the abundant and diverse Barkley Sound at its doorstep, the Centre is ideally situated to provide teaching and research in the marine sciences.

Originally established as a commercial fishery, like most West Coast communities, Bamfield now focuses on tourism and the sport fishery of salmon and halibut in the abundant Barkley Sound. Bamfield is a mecca for divers, hikers, and kayakers alike. Bamfield is the northern most start to the world famous West Coast Trail which was constructed in 1907 following the path of the old telegraph line to Victoria and covers some 77 kilometres of rugged West Coast terrain. For those looking for something less strenuous, they can stroll the boardwalk along the waterfront in historic West Bamfield or explore one of the many deserted white sandy beaches.

Just twelve kilometres west of Bamfield, in the centre of Barkley Sound, there are over 100 islands known as the Broken Islands. These islands are very popular with boaters and kayakers alike as the waters are sheltered compared to Ucluelet and Tofino further up the coast. Add to that the abundance of sea life, including gray whales and killer whales, and you have a recipe for a wonderful West Coast experience. Numerous ship wrecks over the last 150 years have become underwater villages to the abundant sea life in Barkley Sound, resulting in some of the best world class diving experiences.

Bamfield has an elementary school providing kindergarten through grade seven, a church, and a health centre with visiting doctor. The closest pharmacy or financial institution is in Port Alberni. There is a small grocery store with liquor outlet, convenience store, gift shop, gas station, and a variety of eating establishments to choose from. There are two government wharfs to provide safe moorage and fuel.
